The Curly Girl Method Explained: A Beginner's Guide
If you've spent years fighting your curls with heat tools and sulphate-heavy shampoos, the Curly Girl Method (CGM) might just change your life. Developed by curl stylist Lorraine Massey, CGM is a hair care philosophy designed to bring out your curl's natural shape, moisture, and definition — without the damage.
What Is the Curly Girl Method?
At its core, the Curly Girl Method is about working with your curls rather than against them. The method focuses on eliminating ingredients and habits that dry out and damage curly hair, replacing them with moisturising, curl-friendly alternatives.
The Key CGM Rules
- No sulphates — sulphates (like sodium lauryl sulphate) strip natural oils from your hair, leaving curls dry and frizzy. Switch to a sulphate-free cleanser or try co-washing (washing with conditioner).
- No silicones — silicones create a barrier on the hair shaft that blocks moisture. Look for ingredients ending in "-cone", "-conol", or "-xane" to avoid them.
- No heat — air dry where possible, or use a diffuser on a low heat setting to preserve curl integrity.
- No brushing dry hair — detangle only when your hair is wet and saturated with conditioner to prevent breakage.
The Basic CGM Routine
- Cleanse — use a sulphate-free shampoo or co-wash to gently clean the scalp and hair.
- Condition — apply a generous amount of conditioner, detangle with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, and rinse.
- Apply styling products — while hair is soaking wet, scrunch in a leave-in conditioner, then a curl cream or gel to lock in definition.
- Dry — plop your hair in a microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt to absorb excess water, then air dry or diffuse.
- Scrunch out the crunch — once fully dry, scrunch out any gel cast with a tiny amount of oil for soft, bouncy curls.
CGM-Friendly Brands We Love
Not all products are created equal when it comes to CGM compliance. Some brands are specifically formulated with curly hair in mind, free from sulphates, silicones, and drying alcohols. Here are three of our favourites:
Pretty Curly Girl
A beloved CGM-friendly brand with a comprehensive adult range designed to work in harmony with your curl pattern. Start with the Reset Shampoo 250ml to remove any silicone build-up when first transitioning to CGM. On regular wash days, the Peppermint Clean Shampoo 250ml is a refreshing sulphate-free option that cleanses without stripping. Style with the Strong Hold Gel 250ml for defined, long-lasting curls that hold up all day.

Another fantastic CGM-approved brand with a full routine lineup. The Refreshing Weightless Shampoo gently cleanses without stripping, the Weightless Detangling Conditioner makes finger-detangling a breeze, and the Volume & Hold Scrunching Gel gives you defined, bouncy curls with a flexible hold. They also do a brilliant Weightless Leave-In Conditioner — ideal for the styling step of your CGM routine.
Miche Beauty
For sealing in your style and fighting humidity, the Miche Beauty Tropical Oasis Anti-Humidity Gel (8.8oz) is a fan favourite. It delivers strong hold with incredible shine, without leaving hair crunchy — a CGM staple for type 3 and type 4 curls.
Who Is CGM For?
The Curly Girl Method works best for wavy (type 2), curly (type 3), and coily (type 4) hair. However, every curl is different — what works beautifully for 3B ringlets might need tweaking for 4C coils. The key is to experiment, listen to your hair, and build a routine that works for you.
